View Full Version : What are you least proud of?

I know this thread is for areas of your house that you are proud of but I'm trying to get this board hopping so I thought I'd ask what part of your house you are LEAST proud of? Is there are spot you never like company to see? Something that drives you nuts but you haven't the money, time or motivation to attend to it? For me, the sore spot is the orange carpet from the 70's in our living room that has faded to an attractive olive green in some spots. Another sore spot is a recent embarrassment. Our toy breed dog is elderly and is left alone during the day while we work. Her bladder is no longer strong enough for her to "hold it" all day and she has begun urinating in the house. She's small so we didn't notice the problem right away. Now that we have, we've started locking her in a small room during the day (she's sooo not impressed) and are taking steps to clean up the odor. Until it's all gone, I'll be embarrassed to have ANYONE over for fear they can smell it. UGH!!

I have been struggling with our den since we moved in 7 years ago! I just cant be satisfied with furniture arrangement, paint, window treatments. Part of the problem is the built-in bookshelves, which run from floor to ceiling, are a very dark wine color and the walls are gold. I have been trying to put off painting in there anyway because its going to be a huge project just to empty all those shelves! There really is no way to avoid that room as it connects the kitchen and the living room so I see it all the time, and so do guests. It just drives me nuts not to have a finished room!!

Our bedroom drives me crazy!!! I have a specific idea in mind, but just haven't had the money to make the vision a reality. We closed on this house in August and all I've done is move our furniture into this bedroom. Nearly every other room has been painted and (sort of) decorated, except this one. I'm embarressed to admit this, but there's a shower curtain hanging over the window!!! :o

Jilliebean ~ The product Kidz N Pets works wonders on getting rid of doggy accident odors. Really, really.
What are we least proud of... what a great question! I've made some bad color choices in the past, but that's always an easy fix... I think I'm least proud of the projects that I spend too much money on. I thought I'd was thrifty when I had a seamstress recover some throw pillows. I can do the simple stuff, but I wanted these to look professionally done. They did, but at (I'm so embarrassed!) $75 a pillow, every time I look at them I want to kick myself. What was I thinking!!!
I'm very ashamed of my basement. It's a catchall for my future projects and it's a MESS. I can't walk thru most of it. After the sunroom, after the bathroom... someday... See why I get so envious of people who finish projects quickly? I'm wading thru a house of almost done projects!

My spare bedroom is nothing but a storage closet. The kind where you open the door & throw stuff in. I straighten it up but it always goes back to nothing but a mess. :(

I guess, I'm most embarrased by the den. When we moved in it had this gaudy blue on three walls, and a blue "dolphin" toile wallpaper on one wall. Now, don't get me wrong all you dolphin lovers, this is wayyyy cheesy and I'm at a loss as to what to do with it. So there is stays due to my indecision. On top of that the den is a disaster room because it's where we've been sleeping while we finish our bedroom (king size mattress on the floor, kind of like camping, but not as fun). It's like one of those tile puzzles that you have to move one tile to move another and things usually look totally wrong before you solve the puzzle. We're at the totally wrong "before" stage, but making progress....so at the moment the part of my home I'm least embarrased about is the outside!:)

PS Lisa, all the photos we've seen of your home look great, you inspire me on my "We're NEVER going to get all this done" days!

I'm so glad you asked this question, Jilliebean. I have been *so* depressed over the state of my totally undone home. I was out of town this weekend and stayed with family and while there, I was just in total awe and envy being in a completely put together, nice, clean home. Everything there so neat and organized...and did I mention clean????
Here, we are pretty much living on a construction site. We remudded the walls in the living room and kitchen and we're still trying to get the drywall dust off the surface of everything. Our kitchen floor is old beat up and scuffed up linoleum. We will be ordering hardwood floors within the month, so we're not going all out to clean up every paint drip and drywall mud plop. Have I mentioned that we ripped out our living room/hallway carpet last spring? I was having major allergy problems and it just had do go. Good thing - I don't even want to think about all the dust that would have settled into it. Even so, we've been living with painted plywood floors (painted to seal them so the kidlets wouldn't get splinters). Black,of all colors (it was cheap oops paint). Like our old linoleum, it has tons of paint splatters, too, and just looks dirty. We have a corgi and beagle who are constantly shedding - and the hair really shows up on the black plywood - and I sweep everyday. Even though we're ordering floors soon, that doesn't mean we're putting them down soon. Hubs wants to get the major painting projects finished before we put down our flooring.
Hmm, should I continue, lol?! Our bathroom is completely gutted now save for the tub, (thank goodness for the tub!). We want to get our living room and kitchen wrapped up before putting the bathroom back together. It feels so icky being in there...no drywall, one lonely light, plywood flooring, plastic sheets protecting the yet to be tilled tub surround...*sigh* We had to move the bathroom door down 10 inches to keep it from hitting the toilet in it's new location, which means that we have more drywall work to do in the hallway, too.
Apparently, the way this house was built, the only thing keeping the door casings in place is the trim around the door. We're replacing ALL the trimwork in the house (it was built nearly 30 years ago with cheapy trim). We took much of the trim off most of the doors when we mudded the walls. Last night, our coat closet door and part of the casing literally just came crashing down out of place due to the lack of trim around it (now revealing all the clutter within). *Ack!* A far cry from the nice, peaceful, SAFE home that I stayed at while out of town this weekend.
There is so much left to do in this whole house remodel and sometimes it's so hard for me to focus on what we have accomplished. I'm terrified that someone will stop by just to visit, lol. I know exactly where I'm headed with this renovation and what it will look like when it's complete , it's just a tough getting there!
Have I thoroughly depressed everyone? Lol!

We women really put ourselves in a bad spot. We think that other people don't live in the horrid way that we do. Yep, my kitchen pictures look good, but honey you should see my bathroom! I'm looking for that darn camera right this minute...

Two days ago, I would have said "I can't sympathize". Today, I'm starting to feel your pain. We've ripped up carpet to be replaced with hardwood (that we don't yet have). We've moved our furniture into rooms it was never meant to occupy and are trying to keep things clean as we go. Tomorrow morning I will have to search through a MASSIVE pile of laundry to figure out what each family member will wear. For me, my big stress is money because these types of projects have a habit of growing larger than intended. I can already see where we will have to sink more money into this than we agreed upon. We are do-it-yourselfers so there's also no one to complain to when things go wrong. That's frustrating in and of itself.
