Does anyone know what is the best approach is for picking colors for your exterior? How many accent colors are you supposed to have in addition to the base color? Here is a photo of our exterior. We are keeping the orange trim and cream siding, but had been planning on painting all the black parts "Library Pewter" gray/brown. This weekend, I stumbled across this website (http://ecologicthestore.com/), and they have our chosen color scheme with an additional appley green accent color. Do y'all think this would be a good color for the inside of our windows (the actual part that frames the glass) and our metal back door (not shown) or should we introduce this color with porch furniture and other accessories? All of our neighbors houses have this green color somewhere in them, so it would tie our house to theirs. The builder didn't "match" the houses, but he did make sure they coordinated since they are in such close proximity. (See second picture).

Thanks!

I love it that your builder built older style homes. It's amazing to see new construction without a garage as the focal point! Nice work.

I'm no expert, but I think most houses have three colors with a fourth color on the door. I like your idea of adding apple green in either an accent or furniture...

Thanks! We love our little house (although a detached garage would be great), and love the location. Our favorite part is having the tin roof! It's walking-distance to downtown Athens and is in a community that is undergoing a lot of positive changes. Believe it or not, we had a real problem with prostitution at the end of our block a couple of months ago. Luckily the community came together to meet with officials and police to deal with the problem. Thanks for your help. I'll post after pics when we are done painting. That will be after Halloween b/c this is the only time of year orange and black works!

I have another question to add to this one...Do y'all think a large barn star in galvanized metal would look good centered under the peak of our roof (above the horizontal orange beam)?

CohenCottage: Wonderful house!!! I have seen houses around here with up to 4 paint colors. The additional colors are always around the window or door trim , or the door itself. I like it. I think a contrasting door on your house would look great. Is it a new home? Evelyn

Thanks Evelyn! I saw a house yesterday with 4 colors on it too, so I think we will take the plunge. Our front door is actually wood (even though it looks orange in the photo), so we will probably leave it as is, but the back door is metal, so we will paint it green.

Our house was built in 2006, and we've been in it almost 2 years...

I want to live in your neighborhood!! What a wonderful place! Yes, paint 4 colors - this will give the house more dimension and add further character. I say hang the star!!

Would the star be a rust color? I think that would be really sharp. As for the apple green I would use it as an accent color, not alot of it but a nice pop of color.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm ready to get painting, but there are few more chores ahead of that one on the master list. I wish some of y'all would move to our neighborhood! Actually, one house next door to us is about to be for sale. Not sure of the price, but I think he'll ask around 200K to start. Athens is a great place to live, and we are walking distance to downtown, on the greenway, and there are lots of fun things to do. Today was a game day, so things were kind of crazy, but it's always fun. And it was 75 degrees today...
