We went to a block party for the first time in the 5 years we've lived here. Sadly, the attendance was pretty low, especially considering the amazing weather we had yesterday. But there was great food, and we were able to chat with some of our neighbors that we've never met. We also found out that the older man who lives across the block has lived there his whole life (since the '40s or so) and was able to give us a lot of history of our 1927 home. It was fascinating, to say the least :D We learned that the two houses next to ours were built by the same builder, at the same time. I never would have imagined that, since both of those homes have been added on to over the years. Apparently, our home is very close to how it originally looked. He also thinks he may have photos of our house to share with us!

Did anyone else go to one of these?

No but wish we had such a thing. The people who live across the alley from me seem to know it all but do get defensive if you challenge them on some fact. the guy down the alley was talking to me the other night and he seems to know quite a bit about the block as in history wise however he didn't even know the lady I bought the house from last name! I do know that when I moved in the little old lady next door told us that she used to live in my house and that her father built her house while they lived at mine and that after she graduated from school she moved into her current home. We were pretty disappointed when she moved to say the least but she did tell my dh before she moved that our house was indeed one of those 4 room homes. This is my town's centennial birthday so I'm hoping htat a pic will show up of my neighborhood. It is rather addicting isn't it?:o

Meet my neighbors during power outages. We exchange candles and bother the linemen. Our version of National Night Out is a police action to inspire us all to neighborhood watch not a block party. Low turn out - no food - and they are all too busy watching their neighbors as it is. Hey, there are still party lines out here. Cell phone must be a prison thing. Now the County Fair - that is another matter. Prize money for the best sow the focus not discussing history. They are living history and just consider everything as new or old. Think I am crazy with all this rediculous renovation. Tear it down and build something actually new. A lot of other newbies coming in, as crazy as I, and brand new construction so the police are trying a little harder this year. All I know about this house is from the former owner who no one even remembers now. County records even gone.

I remember party lines, was so happy when Qwest got lines out to our area for individual lines. We were unlucky enough to share with the county snoop and gossip.
