i know that aluminum siding is paintable, but experts warn against painting vinyl due to expansion from heat absorbsion... at least they say the new paint color should be lighter than the original color of the siding. But, i'm tempted to do it anyway... has anyone gone for it, and what were your results? how long did it last?

Hello Charolette :)
The people who lived in my house before me closed in the original porch and used vinyl siding.
The painters last summer primed and painted over it. I'm not sure how it is going to wear but so far so good.
The highway dust that settles on my house after time concerns me. I am planning to just gently damp mop the porch walls occasionally. The paint I used was Behr and it was semi-gloss ( the painters suggestion). At first I didn't like the sheen but just as he predicted the weather and sun have dulled the sheen now.
How much vinyl are you talking about? The whole house exterior?

There has got to be a way to paint vinyl, can't see someone picking a color and living with it for the rest of their life. I suppose white would last forever but what about the other colors? No matter how great the siding it will fade at some point. have you asked a painting company on what they'd suggest? Or maybe contact a vinyl siding manufacturer (they'd probably tell you to replace the siding.:())

I thought it was aluminum that you shouldn't paint again. That I can see expanding and contracting, of course I can see that. Walk to the side garden and look between the window to my dd's room and the bathroom. There is plenty of evidence of such. It doesn't dent so I'll say it is vinyl and somebody along the line did paint it. It is rough-ish so maybe it does depend on the paint you use.

Not much help am I?:o

My house has wood shakes, not vinyl, but I was curious...so I looked on askthebuilder.com. Here's the response:

Good article. Then I read his responses to people, wow brutal!!! I knew I hated my siding for a good reason. devious And now I have a good excuse on why we should tear it off instead of painting it. **; Wonder if I should poke the builder and ask what about it started yellow, painted white and now I want it a light yellow. That should make his head spin.

Wonder if people realized what they were doing by putting that stuff up all those years ago. Being stuck with a paint color until the house deteriorates or they replace it. Doesn't sound any cheaper to me in the long run.

They put siding on a large Victorian in my neighborhood and it just hasn't looked right since. Even though it's a Victorian grey color, it's got this vague plastic look to it that it didn't have when it was wooden.

I wouldn't have imagined it would have made such a visual difference, but it really has.

deviousThat is one of the prime reasons I hate the siding on my house now. I tell you what, the 50's - 70's were not kind to older homes. And mine is only 78! :o:() It has all my original trim and rafter tails messed up and it is actually harming my foundation. maybe if someone reputable had done the job it would have been ok but there are so many places on my house that you just want to track down the twit who installed it and force him to fix it. Unfortunately I have no idea who that was. But I know who'll be tear it off as soon as she can get her hands on it.

I've mentioned it before but it astounds me that the colors I've chosen to paint the house are very close to the colors it was originally. I did rip the shadow box off from above the door and it was so close to my color I just stood and gawked. the neighbors probably thought that I'd finally lost it.

Well, Tanya, you're familiar with what colors were during particular time periods and what looks right with what style. So I think it's almost innate to choose a color which really ends up having an "original" feel.

I did the same in my kitchen/livingroom. Apparently at one point the walls were painted a very similar jadeite blue green to the color I'd chosen. It was a surprise!

That sounds like such a pretty color! I really need my house to shout me the answer on the kitchen color though. I do think it was an antique white or pale yellow but sometimes the colors can't be trusted when you find them. It was a kitchen and well unless they were perfect cooks and never burned anything and used electricity the whole time, that paint has been mutated by gas and smoke. :o

It is easier when you use historic paint colors that's for sure. I only wish I could afford the stuff over at Sherwin-Williams but have to rely on Lowes. They better not be messing with me on those paint chips! :() Don't mention this to the family or my friends but I think I messed up with that red I chose for the trim. I either need a different primer, more coats or I just picked the wrong color. sometimes it is kinda Ronald McDonald red. And no I'm not asking dh, you knw what kind of Steeler's freak, umm fan he is. He keeps voting for black and yellow.

Tanya - this has nothing to do with painting... Did you know that your cottage - Briar Rose - is also the name of a person? I just did wedding invitations for a Briar Elese Rose! Isn't that awesome? I don't know if I'd like being named after a thorn, but it goes along with her last name! Well, for now anyway, after she marries it'll be Briar Garcia!

I love that name! My daughters middle name is Coral Rose and our last name is Brown. We joke that she should be happy her first name isn't a color also. :o Like Scarlett, Scarlett Coral Rose Brown. Actually that would be a pretty name. I have rose in many of the things around my house and it just seemed right to name the house Briar Rose Cottage since I do have some unruly rose plants.
