Hi everyone! I'm brand spankin' new to the forums here.

A month ago, I bought a tiny farmhouse and the dilemma I'm left with is how to paint the second floor. The ceiling is slanted down to leaving only 4' of vertical wall on either side of the room. The walls/ceiling are entirely white and I'd like add a bit of color.

What has been anyone's experience with painting this shape of room? Does it lend well to leave the ceiling white? (I'm always keen on doing less painting...!) or does this situation call for painting the entire wall, ceiling and all? Has anyone left the ceiling white and painted the walls a dark or bright color and had it all work out well or do subtle shades prevail here?

I personally prefer to have just a bit of color in the ceiling, usually a much lighter shade of a wall color. White ceiling are safe, but not very exciting, and who wants to play it safe anyway. Don't get too dark with the ceiling though or the room will get dark and you'll need to bump up the wattage of all the room lights to compensate. Many old cottage porches has ceilings that were light blue to keep the wasps from building nests, how about that?

I have done it both ways! The first time I painted it a color up to where the stalnted ceiling met the flat part of the ceiling. I had done a rag wash in denim blue, it was nice. THe next time I painted it, I only painted it to where the wall met the slant, and I must say, that I like that much better, as it leaves the room feeling more light and airy. Let me know what you decide!!

In my cottage, I have the slanted ceilings upstairs.
I painted the whole room a counrty white, including the ceiling, and then used color in pillows, and art work on the walls.
I was always told to treat the room and the ceiling as one.
I hope you will post pictures of your rooms, and show us what you decided.

Hi Trippypaws: Welcome to the forum!

We lived in a rental once with the same wall/ceiling situation in the master bedroom. When we moved in the walls were taupe and the ceiling was white. To me, the different colors drew attention to the low walls and seemed to close in the room. We painted the walls and ceiling country white and it made such a difference. It really opened up the room and made it bright and airy. Like Mckenzy, I then used accessories to bring color into the room.

Good luck--let us know how it goes!
