I don't think I can watch the story about the sick cows and the bulldozer anymore:{ :{ :{
Today I decided not to eat anymore cows. I was almost there already but this has pushed me on over the edge.
God bless the poor little cows .
I'm done...vegtables for me. Well except crawfish.. but only seasonaly.

Memmy,
**sigh** Welcome to my world. It is sad, isn't it? -- how cruel people can be? I haven't had beef/pork/ etc., since 1989. I don't miss it at all. Not even milk. I do like soy milk- thank goodness, 'cause I have to have my cereal ;) But, nah, I don't miss eating beef - not with all the great tofu and vegetarian foods there are out there.

SusiesQs is right...there is a whole world of wonderful eating out there, minus the meat. I don't know if you have a Whole Foods or Wild Oats or other health food type store around you, but it's really fun to find the alternatives. Even my regular supermarket has a freezer chest with delicious veggie burgers, chick'n nuggets and strips (without the chicken) and other goodies. MorningStar Farms is one good brand.
And SusiesQs...Have you ever had Almond Milk? I'm addicted to the chocolate flavor!:)

Oh my goodness! Almond milk? No I haven't, but now I'm going to look for it because it sounds absolutely wonderful and DE-LISH! I drink Silk Soy vanilla and chocolate milk. Pretty good. Is there a particular brand I should look for with the almond milk?
PS I LOVE Morning Star brand. I think their corn dogs are yummy.

Ok girlies tell me how to eat. I love tofu but never have cooked with it. I love love veggie burgers. I make a spaghetti with OO and garlic with what ever vegtable I choose probably 4 nights a week. Whole wheat pasta and whatever. How do you cook without eggs?
I think that crawfish are gonna be hard to pass up for about 2 months this year, beef? I'm out.

Boy wasn't that a heart wrenching clip about the cows...I was soooo upset. NEVER will I eat beef again...poor poor cows. What have we done to our animals? I feel so bad. :(
Maybe we should start a topic on vegetable/creative meals without beef. I don't have any right now, but can do some research.
Memmey- I think crawfish are okay, I plan on still eating fish.

SusiesQs - The almond milk I buy is by ALMOND DREAM...It's the brand that was at the supermarket when someone told me about almond milk and I really enjoy it. It's good for making smoothies too. Yummmm!
Memmey - It sounds like you're well on your way towards healthy eating! Veggie Patch brand offers SO many wonderful options - the products are in the cold section (not frozen) of the store.
Here is a little idea of what they have, and there's even a store LOCATOR up at the top of the page, and a form letter you can give your store manager to ask him to stock the products, if they don't already. VeggiePatch (http://www.veggiepatch.com/)
I am addicted to their veggie meatballs! I heat them in a little olive oil and garlic or onion, and then add my heated spaghetti sauce (I use a ready made one). Use that to top whole wheat or regular pasta and it is really yummy!!
And with the Internet, it's so easy to find delicious and easy recipes excluding meat. In the beginning, I was worried about getting enough protein. If you scroll down on this page How Much Protein Do We Really Need For A Healthy Diet? (http://www.healthrecipes.com/healthy_diet.htm), you'll be amazed how much protein is in plant sources. I was! I'll get off my soapbox now. :o
gigi - That's a good idea about the thread re meatless meals. I don't have time now, but will have some suggestions! :)

Great info! Veggie Patch- I did a search and they sell their products at 2 of my local grocery stores. The veggie meatballs sound yummy! I can't wait until summer. We have one of the best orchards in Maryland- right down the street from me. I don't even have to go to the grocery store in the summer, I just stop by the orchard to pick up fresh veggies, etc... each week.
Also, several years ago I did a farm co-op... in other words the local farmers would co-op there items. For 20 dollars (I'm not kidding!)--- you could feed a family of 4 for the week--- fresh veggies, breads, pies, even a handmade soap was put in sometimes. Now some weeks you'd get bags of tomatoes, and another week more apples than you knew what to do with... Unfortunately, the co-op stopped---because it got too BIG and was too hard to manage. :o

I'm getting excited, this is gonna be an adventure. A worthy adventure.:)
Yep we can start a new thread about meatless eating and maybe some tips on green living and we need to try to keep it going so we will always have a kind of resource from our friends( that is called support right??LOL:D ;)

Gigi ~ you would really enjoy her book. I bought it while my mom was visiting and she fell in love with it, so I bought her one. She bought one for my aunt. The one I'm speaking of is called MaryJane's Ideabook.
I didn't see the show about the cows. I'm glad I missed it. What are people thinking? It's bad, bad, bad on so many levels.

Lisa- Actually I ordered a magazine, but the Idea book sounds wonderful. I will take a peek at that too! Thanks for the info!
And oh- you are lucky that you didn't "view" the cow video- it's just horrific. It's want I needed to see to never eat beef again. Like I said before I never was a big beef eater, but now- NEVER.

I didn't see the clip, but I read about it in the newspaper. Horrible.
I have a lot of trouble with agribusiness and corporate food. When I was growing up, my family grew a lot of our own food, including raising animals to eat. We butchered at home, and I was raised on milk from cows I knew. There is something spiritual about being so close and connected to your food. A chicken from a corporate farm does not taste the same as a chicken that was running around the yard a day ago.
There are so many ethical dilemmas with food, not just meat. I rarely eat beef and pork. If I do, I want to know it was raised close to home and treated well. My uncle used to raise a few pigs, and I would get one with my brother. That was good meat. I want to know where food comes from. I won't buy grapes from Chile, because they don't have the same regulations about pesticides as we do here. And how are the workers treated? We get a lot of migrant labor in the Northwest--conditions have improved for them somewhat, but I know there's still some shady dealings. How do you feel about GMOs (genetically modified organisms)? I personally feel like we don't need to modify plants and animals. I read labels and choose non-GMO soy products. If I still consumed dairy, I would want it from cows that haven't been treated with bGH. I want my food like it was when I was growing up, and I don't mean Twinkies and other things that were popular in the 60s.
A thread about mindful eating is a good idea. Half my cookbooks are vegetarian.

That's pretty much why I said no thanks to these cows raised in pens. They should be out in a field with the sun shining on their hides not in a pen with crap and mud dried to the hair. I guess my choice would be to go with free range non tampered with meat. Hardly surprised me that something like that came out.
As for vegetarian, I was for the most part so until I was diagnosed with soy allergies. Tell me that doesn't put a massive wrench in the works!!!!
