That looks so yummy! I've never seen a King Cake up this way, but I did google up quite a few recipes for them. I think I'll try to make one next year.

RoseMary - I don't know if you have hot cross buns there around Easter, but that's what the King Cake tasted like to me.

Never had those, either, CT. The recipe did make it sound a lot like yeast type pastries~sounds like it would be good!

Who found the baby:lol: ???

Rosemary - My daughter was the one who found the baby - she saw that the cake had sort of split a bit during baking, and his feet were sticking up! :()

Here are some photos of what hot cross buns look like...hot cross buns - Google Image Search (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=hot+cross+buns&gbv=2)

I've never made hot cross buns, but just looked up the recipe. Yup, you're right, RoseMary - Yeast!

http://www.fabulousfoods.com/recipes/breads/yeast/hotcrossbun.html Oh, just realized you said you looked at a recipe for them. Oops! Well, there's another! lol

I have been waiting to see those pictures. A new cultural experience for me!

I haven't heard of hot cross buns in years--we used to sing a song about them. Maybe I'll make some this year. I am still really into yeast breads this winter.

Deb...I haven't thought about or sung that song in AGES but here it is, with a link to the music! :) :()

Hot Cross Buns (http://www.kiddyhouse.com/Songs/Hotcross.html)

Hot Cross Buns,
Hot Cross Buns.
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot Cross Buns.

If you have no daughters,
Then give them to your sons.
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot Cross Buns.

My mother taught me this song when I was little; I think it was an olden street vendor song, originating in England. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories, Deb!

Ok, King Cakes won't be back till next year so you need to move on to the next thing....crawfish. We are all waiting for the season to REALLY start. You can buy them now but they are not so big. The big ones are down in the holes. It's still a little to chilly here for them to come out yet. Maybe the first of March and it's ON!

You don''t have to afraid of them and it is not gross. They are spicey little lobsters. Not quite as sweet. We cook them every weekend during the season. We all have our assigned jobs. I'll go try to find a picture of the set up.

This is how you wash them http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o243/memmey/feb_07134-1.jpg

before you boil them. I am not a big advocate of eating meat, but I do eat these seasonally. I feel bad about how you have to get them ready. I think if we saw them kill cows then we wouldn't eat a hamburger EVER. I eat very very little meat. I would like to cut it out totally. , But then I would miss crawfish season. What to do, what to do.**;

HaHa! I DON'T eat a hamburger - EVER! I got so turned off to it all during that Mad Cow period, and decided to go pretty much vegetarian. Once in a blue moon I'll have a tiny bit of chicken, but that's it (usually if I'm at a restaurant with friends that doesn't have much vegetarian fare). The more I read and see about the meat/poultry industries, the happier I am not to eat it.

Sorry, Memmey, but I don't eat fish/shellfish either (never have!)

Oh I long for Louisiana seafood. I get these wonderful things when I go to visit my best bud in New Orleans. And shrimp (or schwimps as they say) boils. Mm - mmm!!!!

We don't eat a lot of red meat - mostly chicken and some pork. But I am making chili in the crock pot today and did throw in ground beef.

now don't judge the meat-eater:

maybe it's just because I'm from TX, and West TX at that - I don't know anyone that doesn't eat meat around here! The cattle business puts food on the tables of a lot of people in TX, and if it's not cattle, it's cotton or peanuts. We also hunt deer for fun and then eat them all-year-round. (are some of yall wincing right now? lol). I don't think it's gross or wrong because I grew up with it, but my MIL doesn't eat venison, and we all think she's crazy. But anyway, Texans love their meat, especially beef and venison, so if anyone makes their way this direction, I'd be happy to introduce you to some new meat choices.

HaHa, Autumn Joy...I'm not judging the meat eater! I'm a firm believer in
Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks! ;)

I am, however, disgusted with these government agencies (FDA, in this case) that are supposed to protect us, and are doing an extremely shoddy job! The current beef recall is the largest EVER.

I gave up red meat a long time ago too. Probably the popularity of the cow lots and cheap hamburger in high school. I'm odd man out around here too, my dh's family is a long line of butchers and my family is all cattle ranchers. Then again I would consider eating their meat, their cows have actually eaten grass. You know that green stuff that grows in fields, full of chlorophyll not cow crap off the bottom of the pens or dried up hay/oats and whatever else they beef them up with.

Guess I'm into free range. :()

You poor Texans. You NEED to hunt and eat venison all year round. I've never seen a deer population like the one where my mom lives in the San Antonio area. Crazy!

Mmmm... venison with a white wine and parsley sauce. So good!
