Hi, I'm new here. I loved all the ideas everyone has for a cottage home. I hope you can help me. My kitchen is right off a dining room/fireplace sitting area. The kitchen opening is about 4 feet. I painted the dining/fireplace area a sunny yellow with white beadboard below. Off the dining room to your right as you walk thru the kitchen to the dining area are white french doors leading to the living room, painted yellow too. My kitchen is wallpapered with a blue and white checked/plaid color. I really would like to take off the paper as it looks too country. I have no idea what to paint it. There is so much yellow in the other rooms. I wouldn't mind painting any of the rooms as I like to paint. Any fresh cottage, seaside colors I would love as we live across from the Erie canal. I would love a new color scheme. any help or ideas are appreciated!!!
Thanks so much!!!

I have found in past ventures that greens really go great with the golds and yellows. I don't mean the old hunter green, I will research the specific color I am thinking but it is a pale version of a mossy green which looks fabulous against whites, woods, and golds.....It was the throughout color I used in my last home, and it was color, yet neutral enough to host a variety of decorative options. I would also suggest a deep tan which will tone down your color and not clash......then again freeing you up to decorate with fabrics and accessories! Before I post I will research the color online, I know I have it saved in a folder or something......alrighty, found it, it is glidden, precious jasper.....fresh and clean but can be very elegant combined with woods and accessories....for insipiration go to ballarddesign and look at fabrics.....oh, my heaven on earth. I turn to ballard a lot for inspiration. To me it is a bit more classic than pottery barn.
good luck, post pictures!
I hope this helps!

thought I would add my 2 cents;) My new favorite color is shades of pumpkin. My living room is in a soft yellow . . . between the living room and dining room is a big entry way (not yet painted) and my dining room is a mossy green. The kitchen can be seen from the dining room and I did it in 3 shades of pumpkin/spice/peach. It complements the green (and golds) in the dining room but is a warmer space.
And yes, green is always a good choice with yellow - so many shades to cose from. Or, how about red? Love that combination.

Well I figured I'd add my input too...if you're looking for a color to coordinate with yellow, the greens and the reds are an excellent choice. In my own home, I used yellow, green and a shade of red (actually, terra cotta). Being that using too many different colors can result in a sort of chaotic look, I'd suggest using no more than 3 adjacent colors on the color wheel (in this case, yellow, green, and red are adjacent). Any number of combinations with those colors can be successful; it all depends on how you want your rooms to feel. For example, like cheapdiva stated earlier, a red/orange color will make a space appear warmer, and being that the kitchen is often regarded as the "heart" of the home, you may want to go with something in that family. (I used "bellacasa" from Benjamin Moore in my dining room.) On the other hand, a shade of green, which is considered a "cool" color, would have a different effect. Blue is a complimentary color to yellow, so that pair makes for a more energetic effect. I'd say if you like the way the blue feels with the yellow, when you take down the country wall paper, perhaps you can paint the kitchen in a sort of blue green color, which may retain the energy of the original pairing and also give you that seaside atmosphere. My yellow/terra cotta/green rooms are on my flickr account if you'd like to take a look and maybe get an idea:

Hi,
Thanks for all your help. What paint color and brand did you use in the kitchen??

MMarge -
I went to the paint closet this morning and just about died . . . too many cans to dig through. I will have pictures of my kitchen and paint information on my blog by Sunday. I tend to use only Behr paint, so all of that will be on here by Sunday (when I have 2 hours to dig through that closet!!).
