Thought I'd share my insanity with you all. I was putting in a landing at the bottom of my deck steps and ran into something hard. I'm praying it is a paver or a brick or something. Nope yet another sidewalk! This one is about 2-3inches below the grass. I had just tore up the one that was hovering in the middle of nowhere and now I find another.  I tell you this place is where sidewalks go to die. Now I'm unsure what I'm going to do about it. I believe it comes off the old steps from the back door and must go around the house to the side. This is the side that the sidewalk abruptly ends at right into the side of the house (old porch, addition?). Now to add more mystery to the whole thing on the other side at the back of that addition I have a flower bed that I have dug up numerous times and not hit a sidewalk. Where in the H-E-double toothpicks does this sidewalk go to? I couldn't bear excavating the lawn to find out where it ends, guess that will be a hunt for next spring/summer.

Why there are few gardening articles covering this is a mystery to me. New homes = the issue is what did they build over and what did they use for fill. Older homes = what is in the ground, what type/condition the trees...
That could also be an old septic tank or an antique grease trap. The driveway man drove over our unknown and it took a huge tow truck to get him out- and $500. to solid fill the hole. There was the foundation for an old wash house w/still connected water pipes just 6" below ground. Underground propane tanks. The original flower bed rock borders all sunk in the ground had to be dug up. Old patio slabs, bird bath foundations, well tanks.....:(

At least it gives me an idea of what I should be researching and where to start. I'm going to find out when all these additions were put on and hopefully get little tidbits from there. I still don't understand why they had to have so many sidewalks around there. I mean come on pick one side or the other to have a sidewalk on from the front to the back! Knowing the house next door was built by my original owner at least helps explain some of the walks and really does make a nice history. But these buried pavers, bricks, sandstone and sidewalks for no good reason are really starting to annoy me.;) I have been told that the lady I bought the house from had numerous animals that they didn't treat too well so I always pray one of those squares aren't covering a pet. Not sure how that would go over. I'm just hoping that the clothes line poles aren't cemented to sewer pipes or a long buried tank of some sort. I think we're going to just cut the post off as close to the concrete and call it good. We'll add to the mystery of our backyard. :p

I know they are sidewalks because they match the existing in use walks plus where they are and where they come from makes sense in a sick twisted way. I just can't understand how they got so buried and why no one ever tore them out. Pure laziness I suppose. I can see the po not doing it since she was a slug but from the neighbor's reports her parents had a lovely yard full of beds and flowers. Could have fooled me from the condition of the place when I bought it but I do find remnants and every once in a while it will dawn on me why there is hole in the yard. I've located the once homes of my trees, I thought they were from the po little boy but they are in too logical of a spot. I'd like to horsewhip them for cutting them down but am glad they ground the stumps down to the ground if not deeper. For now I just have to keep filling in the indentions with sod.
