I am needing low-budget ideas and colors for the backsplash behind the stove (the rest I am painting).

I am remodeling my VERY 70s kitchen that came with our house. The cabinets are going to be painted white with beadboard on the doors. The coutertops are going to be a yellowish/cream granite (I hope), the floors are wood and the walls are going to be a light sky/aqua blue.

any help is more than appreciated!!!

Hi Georgie:

Your color scheme sounds beautiful! If you're looking for something very low budget, you could paint a decorative backsplash--perhaps tile using your color scheme or a nice mosaic. It's simple to do and would be easy to replace later when you find something you really like. Another thought is using the beadboard there as well, though I don't know what the cost factor would be. Good luck--and keep us posted!

Welcome to the forums!

I put beadboard behind my stove as a backsplash and I'm very happy with it. (I think I may have posted a picture of that part of the kitchen in the House Proud forum). It's more durable/washable than I had expected. I love beadboard because it's pretty inexpensive and easy for homeowners to install. Your kitchen sounds like it's gonna be beautiful!

Hi Georgie,

Would it be possible to use the same yellowish/cream granite for the backsplash?

If you don't use granite, you could afford to have a backsplash that goes the length of your countertops. I believe that is what Jo-Anne Coletti from Vintage Rose Collection used in her kitchen...here is the link to her kitchen make-over. She is very sweet, and I'm sure she'd love to hear from you if you'd like to ask her for ideas.

Or, tiles?
Someone here mentioned beadboard-look tile.

Another idea would be to purchase tiles that match the color of your countertops, and using your sky/aqua blue color, stencil a pattern that you like.

I love your color scheme too! It will be beautiful! I hope you will post how your project is going!

Thanks so much...I thought about beadboard but I think it would be too much beadboard (i really didn't know that ever could be the case :) )

The backsplash is the last thing to decide on and I just burned out!

I like the tile and stencil ideas! I promise to post back a picture when it gets further along.

I like the tile idea. How about using a variety of colors from the walls, cabinets, flooring - checkerboard pattern or used randomly. Almost mosaic in style. There are also many decorative tiles, but they tend to be more expensive. The tiles would add color and texture too.

Good luck!

I was just going to suggest exactly what ptmanan suggested! I've always wanted to do that with different colored square tiles. It's a simple solution, and if you are handy, you might be able to pull it off yourself. Maybe throw in a tile or two with a design. It would definitely add a splash of color and character.

Good luck & have fun!

Hi Georgie,

I've been thinking about the paint on tile idea. Wouldn't the paint come off if you scrubbed the tiles? You are going to cook in this kitchen, right? :D

So I did a quick search and found this info...

Good news, eh?

I did some research on painting/removing tile a while back. Whatever you decide, watch out for lead if you remove or sand the tile, as many tiles contain lead (esp. old ones). I think the OSHA website has tips on how to remove lead paint and tiles.

Good luck on your renovation!

tin ceiling tiles for your backsplash? You can buy them in white, chrome, and copper. And there are many styles to choose from. They come already sealed to prevent tarnishing. And the metal would be easy to clean, and easy to install. If you only need enough for above your stove, it wouldn't cost that much. I think it would look lovely. I have white painted cupboards and am planning on using these tiles for my entire backsplash. Good luck!
